Writing is more than a creative, cathartic release; writing has numerous physical and mental health benefits that are easy to access. There has been research into expressive writing all around the world, including from the Queensland University of Technology who we are currently collaborating with to learn more. Experts are now confident that expressive writing can have positive effects in:
- post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder
- immune system, lung and liver function
- serious long-term mental health problems
- interpersonal communication and relationships
- psychological wellbeing and memory
The Queensland Writers Centre program consists of pairing each client with a qualified health professional who can take them through exercises and scenarios targeted at that client’s personal development. There has been successful trials in this field which have reaped impressive results. These trials were led by Dr Leanne Dodd, CQU lecturer and mental health advocate. Leanne said her participants showed great progress and productivity over the course of their mentorships.
